A partire da febbraio 2011, il numero dei migranti giunti sulle coste italiane ed in particolare, a Lampedusa, come conseguenza della crisi del Nord-Africa, è aumentato consistentemente. Di fronte “all’eccezionale afflusso”, il Presidente del Consiglio dei Ministri, con Decreto del 12 febbraio 2011 ha dichiarato lo stato di emergenza fino al 31 dicembre 2011, poi prorogato fino al 31 dicembre 2012. Save the Children opera a Lampedusa e in Sicilia dal 2008 nell’ambito del Progetto Praesidium, in convenzione con il Ministero dell’Interno e in partenariato con l’Organizzazione Internazionale per le Migrazioni (OIM), l’Alto Commissariato delle Nazioni Unite per i Rifugiati (UNHCR), Croce Rossa Italiana, dal 2010 in Puglia e da quest’anno in Calabria, ha assunto l’impegno di fornire il proprio contributo al potenziamento del sistema di accoglienza dei migranti. A tal fine, l’Organizzazione, ha il compito di monitorare le procedure e gli standard di accoglienza dei minori non accompagnati e dei nuclei familiari con minori a carico nei Centri per migranti (CIE, CARA, CDA) e comunità per minori.
Since February 2011, the number of migrants arriving on the Italian coasts and in particular, in Lampedusa, as a consequence of the crisis in North Africa, has increased substantially.
