Così come nella maggior parte dei paesi europei, anche in Italia è molto difficile reperire dati completi sui minori stranieri non accompagnati presenti : si tratta infatti di un gruppo di minori che si trova spesso in condizioni di irregolarità e che presenta un elevato tasso di mobilità sul territorio. Molto spesso tali minori non entrano in contatto con le istituzioni competenti ad assicurare la loro tutela e protezione, restando perciò esclusi dal godimento dei diritti dei quali sono titolari a parità dei minori cittadini italiani. Il dossier di Save the Children presenta una ricognizione dei dati e delle informazioni al momento disponibili, arricchita dalle raccomandazioni che l'Organizzazione rivolge ad enti e istituzioni per meglio tutelare i minori stranieri che giungono nel nostro Paese.
