Gli Obiettivi di Sviluppo del Millennio (OSM) sono la meta stabilita a livello mondiale per affrontare le componenti chiave della povertà nei Paesi in via di sviluppo – tra cui la povertà di reddito, la fame, la mancanza di accesso all'istruzione, le malattie e l'assenza di acqua pulita e servizi igienico-sanitari – promuovendo al contempo l'uguaglianza di genere e la sostenibilità ambientale. Nel settembre 2005 l'Assemblea generale delle Nazioni Unite farà il punto sui progressi compiuti a livello mondiale nell'attuazione degli OSM da quando sono stati concordati nel 2000. Per prepararsi a questa riunione, la Commissione europea (CE) e gli Stati membri hanno elaborato una relazione di sintesi dell'UE (un "bilancio") che esamina il loro contributo finora al raggiungimento degli OSM. Nel presente rapporto, Save the Children ha fatto un bilancio "ombra" del contributo della CE agli Obiettivi di Sviluppo del Millennio dal punto di vista dei diritti dei bambini. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are the world’s time-bound and quantified targets for addressing key components of poverty in the developing world – including income poverty, hunger, lack of access to education, disease, and the absence of clean water and sanitation services – while promoting gender equality and environmental sustainability. In September 2005, the UN General Assembly will take stock of the world’s progress in the implementation of the MDGs since they were agreed in 2000. To prepare for this meeting, the European Commission (EC) and Member States have developed an EU synthesis report (a “stock take”) reviewing their contribution so far to the achievement of the MDGs. In this new report, Save the Children has carried out a “shadow” stock take of the EC contribution to the MDGs from a children’s rights perspective. Using the Convention on the Rights of the Child, Save the Children : provides a child focused and child rights-based review of the contribution of the EC towards the achievement of the MDGs in the period 2000–2005. Analyses EC policies, programmes and actions relating to the MDG goals and targets relevant for children. Makes recommendations on ways in which the EC could maximise its contribution to the achievement of child-focused MDGs.
