6 months after the Tsunami, Save the Children publishes the report on relief and recovery efforts for the earthquake-affected populations in India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Somalia. The devastating effects of the 26 December 2004 earthquake and tsunami were historic and our response is the largest in Save the Children's 85-year history. Families lost their homes and livelihoods. Entire communities were destroyed. The millions of survivors, particularly children, were vulnerable to disease, hunger and potential exploitation and abuse. Save the Children, active for 30 years in many of the worst affected regions, moved immediately to provide life-saving aid to more than 625,000 people, including 250,000 children, providing shelter, food, clean water and access to medical care. This rapid response helped prevent a second wave of deaths from malnutrition and disease, which many experts predicted would follow the disaster. Thousands of children were saved.
