Save the Children da anni lavora per supportare bambini e ragazzi che affrontano situazioni di emergenza, e ha sviluppato programmi finalizzati a garantire la loro protezione in tali contesti. In modo particolare ha individuato nella creazione di “Spazi a Misura di Bambino” un modo per concretizzare i principi e gli approcci contenuti nella Convenzione Onu sui Diritti dell’Infanzia e dell’Adolescenza e per perseguire le cinque priorità relative alla protezione, definite nel documento di Save the Children Child Protection in Emergencies. Priorities, Principles and Practices: il diritto alla protezione dal danno fisico, il diritto alla protezione dalla sofferenza psicosociale, il diritto alla protezione dalla separazione familiare, il diritto alla protezione dal reclutamento in eserciti o gruppi armati e il diritto alla protezione dallo sfruttamento e dalla violenza. Subito dopo il terremoto del 6 aprile 2009, che ha colpito la città di L’Aquila e gli altri comuni nelle vicinanze, Save the Children Italia ha deciso di intervenire, aprendo all’interno di quattro tendopoli degli “Spazi a Misura di Bambino”, con l’obiettivo di offrire un supporto ai bambini, alle bambine e agli adolescenti, garantendo loro uno spazio fisico nel quale essere accolti, coinvolti e tutelati nei loro diritti, così come sancito dalla Convenzione ONU sui Diritti dell’Infanzia e dell’Adolescenza (CRC).
Save the Children has been working for years to support children and young people facing emergency situations, and has developed programmes aimed at ensuring their protection in such contexts. In particular, it has identified the creation of "Child-Friendly Spaces" as a way to concretize the principles and approaches contained in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and to pursue the five priorities related to protection in emergencies, defined in Save the Children's document "Child Protection in Emergencies. Priorities, Principles and Practices": the right to protection from physical harm, the right to protection from psychosocial suffering, the right to protection from family separation, the right to protection from recruitment into armed forces or groups, and the right to protection from exploitation and violence. Immediately after the earthquake of 6 April 2009, which hit the city of L'Aquila and the other municipalities in the vicinity, Save the Children Italia decided to intervene, opening "Child-Friendly Spaces" inside four tent cities, with the aim of offering support to children, girls and adolescents, guaranteeing them a physical space in which to be welcomed, their rights are enshrined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Rights of the Child.
